In Memoriam: Geoff ‘Dougal’ Wright

A towering presence both on and off the pitch, former Northampton Saints & Northampton Trinity second row Geoff Wright (#1357) passed away last month at the age of 78.

Dougal made his Saints debut in 1967 and went on to record an extraordinary 246 appearances in Black, Green and Gold. Born in May 1947, Dougal began his rugby journey at Long Buckby (but we wont hold that againast him!) before being spotted by Saints and making his Club debut as a 20‑year‑old. He went on to represent Northampton throughout the amateur era but always maintained his contact with his many friends at Trinity, often joining us in our clubhouse for a chat and beer or two.

After retiring from the Saints in 1983 he spent his last playing days with Trinity passing on his huge knowledge of the game to many willing ears – not to mention his great off field persona & Elvis impersonations highlighted during the Wham Boys tour to Whitley Bay.

Dougal later transitioned seamlessly into coaching after retiring from playing, furstly as a Saints youth team coach, then the Wanderers and later as first team Forwards Coach under Barrie Corless and Ian McGeechan, helping shape the careers of numerous future Saints.

His funeral will kick off at 3pm on Friday 30th January at the Nene Valley Crematorium, Wellingborough.
